A Fianna Fáil councillor was told he should leave the comedy to Brendan Grace by another councillor this week after he was accused of making a sexist comment in the chamber. Castlebar Municipal District Councillor Martin McLoughlin, who was co-opted on to the council to replaced Dep Lisa Chambers after she was elected to the Dáil, while paying tribute to outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Al McDonnell said that "your speeches reminded me of the mini-skirt of the '70's. Your speaches were short enough to be interesting and long enough to cover the essentials."

Rebelling against the rebellion

Folklore, song, and verse dedicated to the rebellion of 1798 usually relay the romantic image of an heroic, clandestine, French army joining forces with a willing and equally heroic band of Irish rebels. Bound by a thirst for liberté, égalité and fraternité, the Franco-Irish forces grew in strength as they progressed through the county, bravely securing victories over the might of the British Crown. But one rebel's contemporary account of the Franco-Irish campaign challenges the notion of international solidarity among equals that has dominated the narrative of the events of 1798. 

Whelan co-opted to the council

The number of elected members of Mayo County Council went back up to 30 this week after the co-option of Sinn Fein's Teresa Whelan to the council to replace Senator Rose Conway Walsh. This was the second co-option to the council after this year Oireachtas elections, following the co-option of Cllr Martin McLoughlin to replace Fianna Fáil's Dep Lisa Chambers in the Spring.

The annual meeting of Castlebar Comhairle Ceantar Fianna Fail was held in An Sportlann with the chairman Junior Prendergast presiding. The meeting was addressed by newly elected Dáil deputy Lisa Chambers, and by Cllr Al McDonnell, Cllr Blackie Gavin, and the recently co-opted Cllr Martin McLoughlin.
